For World Mentoring Month in January, we’re celebrating the incredible mentors across FSP who make a meaningful difference to the development and confidence of our colleagues.
David Curran’s commitment to mentoring is shaped by his own experience. Having been mentored for over 30 years, he is a firm believer in the power of mentoring and sees it as a responsibility to pass that support on to others.
Why did you become a mentor?
“I’m a believer because I’ve been mentored myself for 30 years, and it’s had a huge impact on me. I see it as a duty to serve and pass that on for as long as people continue to ask.”
What benefit(s) does mentoring bring you?
“When it works, there’s a deep pleasure in seeing someone else develop and progress. I can also be a much more effective advocate when I understand more of a person’s story. Less obviously, being a mentor makes me better at my job – I learn from the mentee, and sharing my own knowledge and experience feels like giving myself a refresher course.”
For David, mentoring goes beyond guidance – it’s about understanding the individual behind the role and supporting them in a way that helps them move forward with confidence.
Mentoring also plays a key role in David’s own professional development. By learning from his mentees and reflecting on his own experiences, he continually sharpens his skills and perspective.
At FSP, mentors like David truly reflect the spirit of World Mentoring Month, using their experience to empower others while continuing to grow themselves.
