World Mentoring Month – Steve Willoughby

As World Mentoring Month continues, we continue to celebrate the incredible mentors across FSP who make a lasting difference to the growth and confidence of our colleagues.

Steve Willoughby’s passion for mentoring is rooted in a genuine love of seeing others grow and succeed. Steve is a Senior Trainer in our Learning & Skills team.

Why did you become a mentor?

“Personally, I love watching others grow and supporting them on their journey. Every person has a unique set of goals and there’s never one way to achieving them. Identifying the person’s preferred learning styles, character type and what motivates them is different every time. Once these are established, I enjoy adapting my own style to their preferences to get the most out of the mentee.”

What benefit(s) does mentoring bring you?

“I love people, and I love learning from people. Mentoring is absolutely a two-way street where I can adapt the known mentoring and coaching models to fit with the mentee’s style. Mentoring keeps my approach to any engagements flexible, identifying the most efficient methods to helping my mentees achieve their goals. Selfishly, I get a real buzz from being part of someone else’s development journey knowing that I’ve helped in one way or another.”

By taking the time to understand what motivates each mentee, Steve tailors his approach to help them get the most from the experience and achieve their goals in a way that works for them.

His flexible approach to mentoring, he says, “is key to helping people progress in the most effective way.”

And while Steve modestly admits he gets “a real buzz” from being part of someone else’s development journey, it’s clear his impact goes far beyond that, supporting confidence, growth and long-term success along the way.

At FSP, mentors like Steve truly embody the spirit of World Mentoring Month, investing their time, experience and energy to help others thrive.
